My husband and I were driving along the highway, as usual—quietly, calmly, amidst the autumn forest. There aren’t usually any traffic jams here: the road is smooth, there aren’t many cars, and the speed is high. But that day, everything was different.
The cars ahead stood motionless, in a long line. It seemed as if time had stood still.
“Probably an accident,” my husband said, slowing down.
I nodded, but soon I was struck dumb by what I saw.
Dozens of bears were emerging from the forest, right onto the road. Enormous adults and small cubs walked slowly, confused, as if searching for something.
They didn’t growl, didn’t attack the cars, and didn’t show any aggression. On the contrary, they seemed frightened of something.
The bears moved calmly along the highway, avoiding cars, ignoring the honking and noise. Drivers honked and shouted, someone filmed the scene on their phone, but the animals didn’t run away.
They walked in a column—dozens, maybe hundreds of bears, as if leaving their home.
