“Mom, eat here this afternoon — I’ll be home early.” I smiled, comforted by my daughter’s cheerful voice, never imagining that on that very day she would turn my world upside down.

LIFE STORIES

As usual, I went to my daughter’s house to clean, but unexpectedly, around noon, my son-in-law came home, and I also heard a woman’s voice.

A strange feeling gripped me, and I quickly hid in the closet.

As soon as the door closed, I started shaking while listening to the conversation between my son-in-law and an unknown woman.

I am 62 years old and retired three years ago.

Since the day my daughter moved to Manila after her wedding, I usually visit her to help with cleaning and cooking, both for her and her husband, Rafael.

I always worry because Maricel is very busy at work, and Rafael is often on business trips.

Her apartment is on the fifteenth floor of a modern, bright building.

Every time I visit, my heart warms seeing my daughter’s comfortable life and the love between her and her husband.

That morning, as always, I took the first bus from the province.

Maricel called me:
— “Mom, take some time to rest. I’ll be back for lunch soon.”

I smiled hearing her cheerful voice and felt relieved.

Who could have thought that day would change my life forever?

I arrived around ten, cleaned, and prepared sinigang and fried fish for lunch.

While wiping the floor in the living room, I froze when I heard the door open.

Maricel was supposed to be at work at that time.

It was Rafael.

He was wearing a suit, but his shirt was unbuttoned, and his expression looked strange.

I wanted to greet him, but I heard him speaking on the phone.

My body went numb.

Instinctively, I went back to the bedroom closet and quietly closed the door, my heart pounding.

Not even five minutes passed before I heard high heels in the hallway.

A young voice laughed:
— “Why are you scared? Where’s your wife?”

— “I just don’t want my mother-in-law to show up suddenly. She comes here too often,” Rafael’s mistress replied.

I took a deep breath, cold sweat running down my skin.

Their laughter and whispers crushed me inside, and then the woman said a sentence that stopped my heart:
— “And the piece of land in your wife’s name? You said you’d divorce her and give it to me.”

I heard every word.

Rafael replied:
— “I’m thinking about it. Wait until Maricel gets her savings from her mother. Once she has it, I can pay off the debt and leave. Understand?”

My blood froze.

His goal was my daughter’s entire life savings—800,000 pesos, which he wanted to take from Maricel as startup capital.

I wanted to jump out of the closet, but my legs wouldn’t obey me.

The other woman continued:
— “You can say what you want, but I don’t believe you. You promise many things, yet still sleep with your wife. I don’t want to be the third forever.”

Rafael muttered:
— “Calm down, once I have the money, everything will change.”

A silence followed, and then Maricel’s voice came through the phone speaker:
— “Honey, I’ll be home soon. Is your mother there already?”

— “Not yet. I have to meet a client,” Rafael lied coldly.

I felt confused.

The polite, smiling man I knew was now a stranger, lying without hesitation.

The door closed, and the footsteps faded.

Carefully, I opened the closet door.

The room smelled of an unfamiliar perfume, Maricel’s clothes were wrinkled, and Rafael’s wedding ring lay on the table.

I fell to the floor, tears streaming down my face.

— “Maricel… my daughter… how could you marry such a man?”

But crying wouldn’t change anything.

I wiped my tears, took a deep breath, and picked up the phone.

Quietly, I called the police:
— “I suspect my son-in-law of fraud and stealing property.”

Three hours later, when Rafael and the woman returned, the police were already waiting for them.

Maricel came home and froze when she saw her husband in handcuffs.

Rafael struggled:
— “Mom! Why are you doing this?”

I replied coldly:
— “If you haven’t done anything wrong, why fear the consequences?”

Maricel fell to her knees and cried.

I saw the devastation in her eyes.

That evening, I told her everything.

She listened quietly, sobbing:
— “Mom, if you hadn’t come, I would have lost everything.”

A few weeks later, the truth came out: Rafael was deeply in debt due to gambling and planned to steal from Maricel and flee with his mistress.

He had even forged documents to put the house in his name.

On the day of the trial, Rafael hung his head and could not meet my gaze.

The man who had everything lost it all because of his own greed.

Now, Maricel and I live in a small apartment in Quezon City, with complete trust in each other.

People often ask if I regret calling the police.

I just smile:
— “If I had stayed silent, my daughter wouldn’t be safe. My son-in-law would be crying in jail.”

I still remember that suffocating moment in the closet—the day I discovered the truth, the day my heart broke, but the day I became stronger as a mother.
