Raúl thought it would be just one night. He never imagined that this encounter would decide his fate.
He was 25 years old and living in a working-class neighborhood of Bamako. He had graduated two years earlier but had never found a permanent job. His mother was dying in the hospital, bills were piling up uncontrollably, and as an only child, he had to support two younger sisters who were still in school.
To survive, he learned plumbing and took on any odd job that came his way.
One afternoon, he received an urgent call to fix a leak in a luxury villa. He left immediately.
After opening the door, he found himself face-to-face with an elegant, imposing woman in her sixties. Her name was Raquel, a powerful figure in the country’s political and media circles. She was staring at him intently.
«Are you a plumber?»
«Yes, ma’am. I’ll do my job well. You can trust me.»
Raúl did his job. He fixed the toilet with precision. Satisfied, Raquel paid him. But when he checked the transfer, he frowned.
«I’m sorry, you sent me more than we agreed.»
She looked at him in surprise.
«You’re the first person to tell me that. Everyone else keeps the money.»
«That’s not my style, ma’am.»
Raquel smiled. She told him to consider the extra money a reward for his honesty. As Raúl was about to leave, she called after him.
«Raúl… stay with me tonight.»
He froze.
«Excuse me?»
«Just one night, and I’ll give you anything you want: money, a house, a car.»
«I’m sorry, I can’t.»
«Even to save my mother?»
Raúl shook his head.
«I’m not that kind of man.»
And left.
This rejection hit Raquel like nothing she’d ever heard before. Four divorces, humiliations, betrayals, men only interested in her money… and now this poor, desperate young man rejected her out of self-respect.
That same night, she called him to invite him to lunch. Raúl refused again. His friend Esteban, hearing this, exploded with anger.
«You’re crazy! Your mother is dying. Maybe it’s a blessing.»
Doubts tormented him. Finally, he agreed to meet Raquel at the elegant restaurant she’d reserved especially for them.
«Why me?» Raúl asked.
«Because you’re honest. You made me feel respected… loved.»

When Raúl introduced her to his family, the rejection was brutal. His sisters humiliated her because of her age. Raquel left in tears. She had broken up with him… or so she thought.
Raúl didn’t give up. He fought for her, confessed his love without shame or fear. And Raquel believed again.
But another threat emerged: María, Raúl’s adopted daughter. Jealous, possessive, and unable to accept losing the spotlight, she tried to seduce Raúl. He rejected her time and again.
