The rain was pouring down when Ivan stepped over the threshold of the shelter for stray animals. He was silent, his gaze heavy, and he spoke quietly but confidently. When the employee asked him what he wanted, he answered immediately: he needed the most dangerous dog. The one everyone had given up on. The one long considered beyond hope. That was exactly the dog Ivan needed.
The employee named Irina was confused when she heard such a request. She tried to talk the visitor out of it, but he would not back down. A few minutes later, they brought a large German Shepherd into the room.
One ear was mutilated, and the dog’s gaze was empty and cold, as if there had been no one inside for a long time. The dog did not growl or move, it simply stared. Ivan suddenly caught himself thinking that he recognized this pain. The dog’s name was Shadow, and the name suited him far too well.
Shadow had spent three years in a concrete cage. Several times they had tried to find him a home, but every attempt ended badly. The last time, a person was injured.
After that, the dog was declared dangerous and permanently removed from the list. Ivan silently signed the papers. With a trembling voice, Irina asked if he understood the risk he was taking. The man briefly replied that he did.

He simply sat nearby, read aloud, or hummed quietly so the dog could get used to his voice. After a few days, the man noticed terrible burns on the dog’s side and quietly said that it had been through a lot.
A week later, something happened that Ivan did not expect. Shadow came up on its own and carefully placed its paw in his palm. From that moment on, everything began to change. The dog started going for walks, obeying, and looking at the world differently.
