The man had worked in these forests for almost thirty years. After his wife’s death, he almost stopped going to the city. His children had long been living their own lives, and he was left with an old house on the edge of the forest and the job without which he could no longer imagine himself.
Every morning began the same way. The man put on his heavy boots, took his rifle — mostly for appearance, to scare off poachers — and went on his rounds. He checked whether anyone was cutting the forest without permission, whether tourists had left fires or trash, and whether there had been any landslides after the rain. The forest was his responsibility, and he treated it seriously.
That day everything went as usual. A quiet morning, cool air, birds calling to one another in the treetops. The dog ran ahead and sometimes came back, as if checking whether his owner had fallen behind.
When the man approached the cliff, he stopped. This place had always been dangerous. The stones crumbled, and the path sometimes collapsed after rain. He decided to come closer and see whether anything had happened in the last few days.
And then he heard a sound.
At first it seemed like just the wind. But then he heard it again — a quiet, plaintive meow, as if someone were calling for help.
The sound came from the very edge of the cliff. The forester carefully moved closer and looked down.
A lynx was hanging on a rocky ledge.

The lynx noticed the man.

The forester understood one simple thing: if he left now, the animal would fall and die.

The lynx jerked, but its paws were already slipping on the stone. The man grabbed its front paws and immediately realized how heavy it was.
The animal was large, and his own body lay at the edge of the precipice. The stones creaked under his chest, and snow fell down into the abyss. If the lynx suddenly jerked, they could both fall.
The lynx tried to break free, growled, and struck the rock with its hind leg. Several times its body suddenly hung heavily, and the forester had to hold it with all his strength so it wouldn’t fall.
He pulled it up slowly, centimeter by centimeter.
His elbows slid on the ice, his hands went numb from the strain, and his breathing became uneven. Several times it seemed to him that he had no strength left.
The lynx slipped down again by a few centimeters, and the man barely managed to hold it.
He braced his boots against the rock, clenched his teeth, and pulled once more.
The heavy body finally reached the edge of the cliff. The lynx rolled onto the snow and immediately tried to crawl away to the side. It was breathing heavily, and its paw still moved poorly.
The forester carefully crawled away from the edge and sat on a stone, catching his breath. He expected the lynx either to run away or to attack him.

Right by the doorstep lay fresh prey — a large hare. At first the forester thought it was the work of poachers or hunters. But there were no human footprints around, and no dog tracks either.
Only large feline tracks were visible in the snow. The man slowly walked around the porch and looked toward the forest.
At the edge of the clearing, between the pines, stood a lynx. The same one.
It looked at him calmly and did not try to hide. For a few seconds they simply looked at each other in silence. Then the lynx slightly tilted its head, as if checking his reaction, turned around, and quietly walked back into the forest.
The forester stood on the porch for a long time, looking at the tracks in the snow. Apparently, the wild cat had decided that this was the proper way to thank the one who had once saved its life.
