The flight attendant came to me and said, “Please remain seated after landing, the pilot would like to speak with you personally.”

LIFE STORIES

I thought my big business trip to Los Angeles would be just another day, until a mysterious request from the pilot made me question everything I knew about my past. The truth he revealed was that he would change my future in ways I could never have imagined. My flight to Los Angeles was supposed to be uneventful, but what happened in those two hours changed my life forever. Before I tell you all about it, let me explain why I had to go to LA that day.

I work as an architect for a well-known construction firm, and it’s my dream job. Let me tell you, it wasn’t luck that got me here. It was my hard work and all those sleepless nights in school, honing my skills and learning new concepts. Recently, my boss gave me the opportunity to present a major project to some of our top investors in Los Angeles.

It was a huge accomplishment because it could lead to a long-awaited promotion, so I jumped at the chance.

Honestly, I was so grateful because it also gave me the chance to make my mom, Melissa, proud. She’s my best friend, especially because she raised me alone. She told me my father died before I was born, but she never stopped me from pursuing my dreams. My mom has always supported me, and I love that about her.

When I told her about the meeting in LA, she hugged me and said, «Go for it, honey! I’ll be praying for you.»

The time at the airport flew by, and soon I was settled into a comfortable seat, ready for takeoff. The flight attendants were very welcoming, and I was lucky because there was an empty seat next to me!

As the plane began to take off, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I had prepared well for my presentation, hoping the investors would enjoy it.

A few minutes after takeoff, a friendly flight attendant, Bethany, approached me with a tray of drinks.

«Can I offer you something to drink?» she asked with a smile.

«Just orange juice, please,» I replied, raising my hand to take the glass. Then Bethany looked at the moles on my wrist.

«Excuse me, can I have your passport?» she asked suddenly.

Well, that’s strange, I thought.

Confused, but not wanting to argue, I handed it to her. Bethany examined it carefully and then handed it back with a nod.

«It’s a standard check. Thank you!»

Sounds good.

A short time later, Bethany returned to my seat.

«Excuse me, are you in a hurry after landing?» she asked.

«Yes, I have a connecting flight and I’m already late,» I explained, involuntarily clapping my hands together.

«The pilot wants to talk to you after landing.»

«Pilot?» I asked. «Why? Can’t he just talk to you now?»

«I’m afraid not,» Bethany replied seriously. «He wants to talk to you personally. I know you’re in a hurry, but believe me, you’ll want to hear this. You’ll regret not listening.»

I sat there, completely confused.

What on earth could the pilot be telling me? And why did it have to wait until landing? My important meeting was about to take place, and I didn’t want to risk missing my next flight. But Bethany’s insistence made me feel it was important.

As the plane landed and the other passengers began to disembark, I braced myself and waited patiently for the pilot to approach.

When the cabin cleared, a tall man with graying hair entered and immediately looked me in the eye.

At that moment, I literally dropped my bag and coat. My jaw dropped, because I was certain I’d seen this man before.

I recognized him immediately from the old photos my mother had shown me. It was Steve, her childhood friend.

But the man didn’t seem happy to see me.

In fact, tears streamed down his face as he hugged me tightly. I stood there, completely distraught, as he sobbed into my shoulder.

«What’s going on?» I asked, my voice shaking. «What happened?»

He pulled back and looked at me with red eyes. Then he gently took my hand and showed me the mark on my wrist. It was exactly the same as mine.

«Courtney,» he managed, «I’m your father.»

«Wait, what?» I looked at him wide-eyed. «My father? But my mother said…»

Why did my mother lie to me? I wondered. Why didn’t she ever tell me Steve was my father?

«I don’t know what Melissa told you, Courtney, but it’s true,» Steve continued. «She suddenly disappeared from my life just as I was about to start flight training.»

«She didn’t tell me she was pregnant… I heard it from a friend, but it was years after you were born.»

At that moment, all I wanted was to confront my mother. I wanted to know why she’d left Steve. I wanted to know why she was hiding everything from me.

I immediately grabbed my phone and called her.

«Mom, why didn’t you ever tell me about Steve?» I asked as soon as she answered. She had me on speakerphone so Steve could hear me. «Why did you keep this from me?»

«Steve? What do you mean, honey?» she asked, still trying to hide the truth.

«Mom, please stop!» I rolled my eyes. «I just met Steve on the plane. He’s here with me. Please tell me everything now. I need answers. He does too!»

After a few seconds of silence, Mom finally spoke. Her voice was thick with emotion as she began to explain.

«Oh, Courtney, I’m sorry,» she cried. «When we were young, Steve wanted to go to flight school and be a pilot. But then I got pregnant by you… and… I knew if he found out, he’d give up his dreams to be with us…»

«I couldn’t let him,» she continued after a moment. «So I left without telling him. I thought it was the right thing to do then, but now I see how much it hurt us all.»

Steve’s face darkened as he listened.

«Melissa,» he choked out, «I loved you so much. I would have done anything for you and our baby… Why didn’t you trust me?»

«Steve? Oh, God…» Mom gasped. «I thought I was protecting you. I was scared. I’m sorry, Steve. I’m so, so sorry.»

My head felt like it was going to explode. All these years, my mother had lied to me about my father’s fate, and now here he was, a complete stranger, pouring his heart out to both of us. I couldn’t process it.

«Mom, this… this is too much to take in,» I stammered. «I’m already late for an important investors’ meeting… I don’t know how I’m going to LA now.»

Steve’s eyes widened when I mentioned the investors.

«Are you going to LA? What’s the meeting about?»

I quickly explained the details to Steve. I told him I had to present a big project to get a promotion at work.

I saw his expression change when I told him about the company and the investors.

«Then we can’t let you be late for this meeting,» he declared, «because I know these investors very well, Courtney.»

«What? What?» I asked.

«Years ago, I flew on their private jet, and they were very kind to me,» Steve revealed, picking up his phone. «Let me make a few calls and schedule the meeting for today.»

And indeed, he got to work, making a few quiet phone calls. Within an hour, I was ushered into an elegant conference room. I couldn’t believe it.

The best part was that the meeting went better than I could have imagined. The investors were impressed and agreed to fund my project idea. On top of that, I got a call from my boss, offering me the promotion I’d been waiting for. I was incredibly happy!

As I left the room, I saw Steve waiting for me with open arms.

«You did it!» he exclaimed, hugging me tightly. «I’m proud of you, Courtney.»

I felt a lump in my throat as I hugged him back.

This man, whom I’d never known before, had now become an integral part of my life, and somehow, I felt it all fit. All those years of feeling like something was missing had led me to this moment, and I couldn’t help but wonder what the future held.

The following week, Steve came home to visit my mother.

It was an emotional reunion, filled with tears, laughter, and a sense of completeness I’d missed for so long. That day, I understood what it was like to have a complete family.

That night, as I lay in bed, I couldn’t help but think about the incredible turn of events. Who would have thought that a routine flight to LA would lead to the discovery of my long-lost father? It was a plot straight out of a movie. But here I was, living this story.

And though it was overwhelming, I couldn’t help but feel grateful and excited about what the future held.
