I climbed the ladder to prune branches, and my dog grabbed the hem of my pants with his teeth and pulled me down: and suddenly I understood the reason for such strange behavior 😨😨
I still remember that day well. The morning was gray: the sky was covered with clouds, the air still and muggy. It looked like it was going to rain. But I decided not to delay—I had to prune dry branches from the old apple tree by the house. I had set up the ladder long ago, and despite the gloomy sky, I decided: I’ll do it today.
I leaned the ladder against the trunk and started climbing. But as soon as I’d managed a few steps, I felt a push from behind. I turned around and—I couldn’t believe my eyes.

My dog tried to climb the stairs after me. His paws slipped, his claws tapped on the metal, and his eyes looked straight at me.
“What are you doing?” I said, smiling nervously. “Stay down.”
I tried to shoo him away with a wave of my hand, but he reared up on his hind legs and clung to the rungs with his front paws. Then he grabbed the hem of my pants with his teeth and pulled me down so hard I nearly lost my balance.
“Ouch! Are you crazy?” I hissed. “Let go!”
But he didn’t let go. He put his paws on the stairs and pulled me down, as if he were doing it on purpose.
Irritation and an incomprehensible sense of fear warred within me. “Why is he doing this?” I thought. “Maybe he’s playing?” But no, there was more in his gaze. A persistent warning. As if he was trying to tell me: “Don’t go there.”
I chased him away again, even threatened him sternly:
“Are you leaving or not? Let me saw off these branches in peace!”
But as soon as I climbed even higher, he grabbed my trouser leg again and pulled me down. I was barely holding on, my heart sinking—one wrong move and I could fall.
I stopped, gasping, and suddenly realized: we’re not going to get far like this. If he keeps going, I’ll really fall and break everything I can. I had to make a decision.
I went down, looked him sternly in the eye, and said:
“Okay. Because you’re so smart, you can sit on the chain.”
He bowed his head guiltily, but I led him to the stall anyway and buckled him in. I thought I could finally finish what I started in peace. I grabbed the ladder and was about to climb back up, when something unexpected happened 😢😨 Then I realized why the dog was acting so strangely. Continued in the first reaction 👇👇
A bright, blinding light ripped through the air. A roar followed immediately. Lightning struck the tree, right at the trunk where I was about to climb. There was a crackle, the smell of burnt bark, sparks flying everywhere. I jumped back and pressed my hands to my face.
For a moment I froze, unable to breathe. Only after a few seconds did it hit me: if it weren’t for my stubborn dog, I’d be up there now, on this ladder, at the very top. And then…
I looked at him again. He was standing by the cage, tightening the chain, and looking at me with that same look that held more understanding than human words.
“Oh my God,” I whispered, feeling goosebumps run across my skin. “You have my life.”
I sat down next to him, hugged him around the neck, and he gently wagged his tail, as if he knew he’d done everything right.
And then I realized: sometimes our animals see and feel things we humans don’t.
