LIFE STORIES

😨😵A boy tried to hide his hands from me on the school bus—and when I saw them, my heart sank.

I’ve been driving a school bus for fifteen years. It’s not an easy job, but children are my reason to get up every morning. I’ve seen a lot, but what happened last week I’ll never forget.

That morning was especially cold, but it wasn’t the frost that made me stop—it was a quiet sob from the back of the bus.

After the morning drop-off, I walked down the aisles as usual, checking to see if anyone had forgotten a notebook or mitten. Then I heard a soft sob. A boy of about seven was sitting in the corner, by the window. He was wearing a thin jacket, his backpack on the floor.

«Hey, buddy, what are you doing here?» I asked.

He didn’t look at me, hiding his hands behind his back.

«I’m… just cold,» he whispered.

I sat down next to him.
«Show me your hands, baby.»

😨😱He slowly extended them forward. I froze, looking at his hands—something inside me snapped.

I knelt down next to him, feeling uneasy.
«Show me your hands, baby,» I asked quietly.

He hesitated for a long moment. Then he slowly extended them forward. His small palms trembled—the skin was cracked, bluish, and covered with tiny scratches. It felt like one touch and they would crumble like ice.

«Where are your gloves?» I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

«They’re torn…» He looked down. «Mom said she’ll buy new ones when she can. They’re already trying hard… I’ll wait. I just… wanted to warm my hands here a little. It’s really cold outside. Something tightened inside me. I looked at those small fingers and realized he shouldn’t wait.

«What if I don’t wait that long?» I said, trying to smile. «I saw some nice gloves and a scarf at the store near the school. I’ll buy you some, okay? In the meantime, put on mine. They’re big, but warm. Let your hands thaw out a bit… until we meet again.»

He looked up at me and suddenly smiled—timidly, gratefully.
And at that moment, I felt my heart warm along with his hands.
