LIFE STORIES

When her husband brought the divorce papers to the intensive care unit and placed a pen in his wife’s fingers, he was sure it would all be over in a matter of seconds. But when he saw what she had written on the paper, he simply froze… 😲😲

Eva could barely feel her body. It felt alien and too heavy. Six months of hospital walls, IVs, and pain had taken their toll. She had lost a significant amount of weight, her skin had become pale, and her voice had almost completely disappeared. Sometimes she could only manage a whisper, and even then, with difficulty.

The cancer had been discovered unexpectedly. First, tests, then surgery, then endless treatment. The doctors spoke carefully, making no promises. Every day took away her strength, but not her will to live. She clung to that will with all her might, even when she could no longer get out of bed.

That day, she was in intensive care after another difficult course of treatment. The monitors beeped softly, the light hurt her eyes. Eva stared at the ceiling, trying not to think about anything.

The door to the room opened, and her husband appeared. The one they had lived with for almost fifteen years. He looked neat, his expression strained with concern.

“I won’t be long,” he said quickly, as if afraid he might change his mind.

“These are formalities,” he said quickly, coming closer. “We need your consent for the operation. The doctors won’t do anything without your signature.”

He spoke confidently, giving her no time for questions or doubts. He pulled out the papers and carefully covered the top of them with his hand.

“Everything here is standard,” he continued. “I’ve already discussed everything. You just need to sign.”

He placed the pen in his wife’s fingers. Her hand trembled, and she had almost no strength left. Her husband leaned over and gently guided her palm, as if helping.

Eva felt a strange calm growing inside. She couldn’t argue and she couldn’t speak, but she understood perfectly well what was happening.

Gathering her remaining strength, she slowly drew the pen across the paper.

Her husband eagerly watched the pen’s movements, already imagining that everything had been decided, that he was already free. But when he saw what his wife had written, his face changed dramatically.

He turned pale, unable to utter a single word… 😱😲 The rest of the story can be found in the first comment 👇👇

Eva wrote slowly. Her hand was shaking, her fingers were stiff, but she took her time. She wrote each letter carefully, as if she knew it was more important than any surgery.

The words appeared on the paper:

“I refuse consent to surgery. Divorce only through the courts.”

At first, her husband didn’t even understand the meaning. He mechanically scanned the lines, expecting to see a signature. Then he read it again. And again.

He sat up abruptly. His face became tense, his lips white. Thoughts raced through his head.

Through the courts.

He knew perfectly well what that meant.

They wouldn’t divorce his wife in this condition. No judge would take that decision when she was in intensive care, with a serious diagnosis, on life support. As long as she was alive and officially declared seriously ill, there would be no divorce.

The man clutched the sheet of paper in his hands, then slowly opened it. The paper was useless. Everything he had planned to do quietly and quickly crumbled in an instant.

Eva closed her eyes. She no longer looked at her husband or waited for a reaction.
