After three years of a relationship, the man I loved suggested an “open relationship” — and that same evening he went to another woman. 🤔

LIFE STORIES

Daniel and I lived together for three years. At first everything was bright, loud, full of fire. Then it became calm.
Evenings in front of the TV, conversations about bills, weekend trips to see parents.
I thought this was adult love — without storms, but with stability.
But as it turned out, he felt as if he wasn’t living at home, but in a cage.

That evening he was strange.
Restless, moving from room to room, as if preparing for an important performance.

— We need to talk, he said, sitting down across from me.

I already knew: good news doesn’t start like this.

For about fifteen minutes he talked about freedom.
About monogamy being an outdated model.
About people not being naturally meant for just one partner.
About love not being supposed to restrict.

— I’m proposing an open relationship, he finally said. — We stay together, but without rules. And we can see other people at the same time. That will be better for us.

I looked at him and understood one simple thing: he was bored.
But he didn’t want to leave. Life with me was comfortable.
A home, dinner, clean shirts, a calm woman by his side.
He wanted excitement without losing comfort.

— So you want to date other women? I asked.

— I want us both to be free, he corrected me seriously. — That’s honest.

But his eyes said something else:
He was sure I didn’t need anyone and that no one would look at me.
In his mind, “freedom” was a ticket for him.
For me — just a formality.

— Okay, I said.

He even looked confused.

— Are you serious?

— Absolutely.

That same evening he “went to see friends.”
He came back in the morning smelling of someone else’s perfume, with an overly satisfied look on his face.
The next day he was attentive — he even washed the dishes.
Apparently, he does have a conscience after all.

A week passed.
He texted in front of me without hiding his screen.
Now it was “allowed.”
And I watched.

Then I came up with the perfect plan to show him that he can’t treat me this way.
I did something that made him furious.

Suddenly I remembered Alex. His acquaintance from the gym.
We sometimes talked in company.
He always kept his distance.
Respected our relationship, even though I felt he liked me.

I wrote to him.
Nothing special. Just asked how he was doing.
Then I mentioned that we now had an “open format.”

— So it was his idea? Alex clarified.

— Yes. It was his idea.

That evening Alex invited me to a restaurant.

I put on the dress Daniel once called “too revealing.”
Did my hair, light makeup.
When he walked into the apartment, I was already standing by the door.

— Where are you going? he asked.

— On a date.

— With whom?

— With Alex.

His face changed instantly.

— Are you serious? With my acquaintance?

— What’s wrong with that? We agreed. Freedom for both of us.

He said nothing. Just stood there, looking as if his world was collapsing.

The evening was easy.
We talked. Laughed.
No one crossed any boundaries.
But for the first time in a long while, I felt alive.
Like an interesting woman, not a convenient piece of furniture.

When I came back, a scandal was waiting for me.

— How could you? he almost hissed. — This is humiliating!

— In what way? I asked calmly. — I’m just living by the rules you proposed yourself.

— That’s different! he shouted. — I’m a man! I have needs! And you’re doing this out of spite!

And then came the main line:

— I suggested this to save the relationship, not so you could go out with other men!

That was the whole truth.
Freedom — for him.
Loyalty — for me.

We broke up a few days later.
He tried to take everything back.
Said he had overreacted.
That we should forget the experiment.
But I had already seen everything clearly.

He didn’t need a partner.
He needed a comfortable rear base.

Nothing serious happened with Alex.
And that wasn’t the point.
He simply helped me remember who I am.

Now I’m alone.
And this is not loneliness.
This is real freedom — without double standards and without the role of a backup option.
