Flight 2A219 disappeared on December 4, 1983, during a flight over the northern latitudes. There were 150 people on board. The crew’s last radio signal was cut off at 11:47 PM. After that, the plane seemed to vanish into the cold sky. The search lasted several months, but harsh weather conditions and the technical limitations of the time made it impossible to determine the exact crash site.

For nearly forty years, the wreckage remained hidden under several meters of ice. In January 2024, satellite imagery recorded an anomaly — a metallic object beneath the ice surface. After analyzing the coordinates, an expedition was organized.

The plane was located about 24 meters under the ice. The temperature inside the fuselage remained at minus 38 degrees Celsius. Thanks to this, the cabin became a sort of “time capsule.”
Researchers found passengers’ personal belongings, bags, children’s toys, and documents. A particular point of interest was the diary of one of the flight attendants. Entries were kept for several days following the forced landing.
The records showed that some passengers survived the crash and attempted to organize a survival system in extreme cold conditions.
Medical records of the onboard doctor, ration distribution plans, and notes from the captain regarding the crew’s condition were also found. These documents allowed reconstruction of the first hours and days after the accident and understanding of how events unfolded.
The black box was found separately from the main fuselage. Analysis showed that the plane had entered an extreme turbulence zone at about 10,500 meters altitude. Sudden temperature changes caused intense icing of the engines.
At the same time, structural overload occurred, and the crew lost the ability to stabilize the flight.
According to experts, the crash resulted from a combination of a rare atmospheric phenomenon and the aircraft’s technical vulnerability under such conditions.
During the expedition, a family of polar bears was observed near the camp, which complicated researchers’ work and required additional safety measures.
However, experts noted that the animals were cautious and did not approach humans dangerously.
The discovery of flight 2A219 allowed one of the most mysterious chapters of late 20th-century aviation history to be closed.

The data obtained complemented knowledge about the influence of extreme atmospheric processes on aviation and provided a basis for new recommendations regarding flight safety in Arctic latitudes.
