The dog grew thin, tired, lay more and more often in a corner, breathing heavily. The veterinarian said it plainly: if this continues, she won’t survive.
Those words did not please the owner. Instead of stopping, he became irritated. The dog no longer brought him joy; she became a problem. And problems, he was used to solving quickly.
That day he took the animal deep into the forest. He walked in silence, without looking back. The dog, as always, enjoyed the walk and didn’t understand why her owner wasn’t talking to her. When he stopped, tied her to a tree, and left, she first thought it was a game.
The dog waited. Then began to pull at the leash. Then to whimper.
By evening she was already howling. Calling out, losing her voice, struggling so hard that the chain cut into her neck. Leaves rustled, it grew cold and dark. No one came.
When the sun was almost gone, a gray wolf emerged from the depths of the forest. He walked slowly, cautiously. He stopped a few steps away and looked at the dog. Not with a snarl or bared teeth. He simply looked.
The dog froze. She expected an attack, but she feared nothing anymore, because the worst had already happened to her.

But each time someone came too close, the wolf stood up, placed itself between them and her, and growled softly. That was enough to make the intruders retreat.
The wolf did not touch her. It did not come too close. It simply stayed nearby.
The dog no longer howled. She lay there, breathing heavily, occasionally lifting her head to check whether the wolf was still there. And the wolf was there. All night long.
