LIFE STORIES

Over the past few weeks, my daughter had been constantly complaining that she was sleeping poorly and that her bed had become too small for her. At first, I thought it was just a child’s imagination and didn’t pay much attention to her words. 🫣
But one day, I decided to install a camera in her room… and soon I realized with horror why my daughter had been feeling so cramped in her bed at night. 😨😱

Every evening, the routine was the same. I would tuck Emily into bed, straighten her blanket, read her a few pages from her favorite book, and kiss her on the forehead before turning off the light.

She had long been used to sleeping alone in her room, and it had never caused any problems. For many weeks, everything worked perfectly.

But one morning, Emily quietly came into the kitchen while I was preparing breakfast. She was still sleepy, wearing socks, with a tiny drop of toothpaste at the corner of her mouth.

She hugged me around the waist and quietly said she had slept poorly.

I asked what had happened, thinking she had just had a nightmare.
She paused for a moment, then said a strange sentence:

— Mommy, my bed has become smaller.

At first, I even laughed and told her that her bed was so large that another person could easily fit in it.

But she shook her head and said seriously that it felt cramped at night.

I didn’t pay much attention at the time because children sometimes say strange things.

But the next day, she said the same thing. And the day after that again.

Sometimes she said she constantly woke up at night.
Sometimes she complained that it felt like someone was pushing her in her sleep.

One evening, she suddenly asked me something that made my chest tighten.

She quietly asked if I came into her room at night.

I knelt in front of her and calmly said no.
I explained that I sleep next to her dad at night and don’t go anywhere.

She was silent for a moment, then quietly added that sometimes she felt like someone was lying next to her.

I quickly smiled and told her it was just a dream.
But at that moment, I felt uneasy myself.

That evening, I told my husband about it.
He had returned after a tough shift at the hospital, tired and irritated, and just waved it off.
He said children often make up such things, and our house is completely safe.

I didn’t argue, but the fear for my daughter’s safety didn’t go away.

The next day, however, I bought a small surveillance camera and discreetly mounted it in a corner of Emily’s room.

The camera was almost invisible and operated silently.

The first night, everything looked completely normal.
The recording showed only my daughter, sleeping peacefully in the middle of the bed.
She breathed quietly, occasionally shifted slightly in her sleep, and nothing unusual happened.

I even began to think that this had truly been just a child’s imagination.

But one night, around two a.m., I woke up and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water.
Out of habit, I opened the camera app on my phone and just glanced at the screen.

And at that moment, my heart nearly stopped.

Because the bed was no longer empty.

And at that moment, I realized with horror why my daughter had felt so cramped in her bed all this time. 😲😱

Someone was lying next to Emily.

I stared at the screen for a few seconds, trying to understand what was happening. The camera showed an adult lying quietly next to my daughter.

It was my mother-in-law. She was lying quietly next to Emily, covered by the edge of the blanket.

And at that moment, I immediately remembered our old argument.

A few months ago, we had a serious argument because I had decided that Emily should sleep in her own room. My mother-in-law had practically stormed at me with accusations.

She said I was a bad mother, that small children cannot sleep alone, that they might be scared at night, that something could happen to them.

I had calmly but firmly said that my daughter should have her own room. She was very offended. And now I understood what had been happening.

When the whole house slept, she would quietly get up at night, go into Emily’s room, and lie next to her until morning. She was convinced she was doing the right thing and helping the child, without realizing that she was actually scaring her and making her feel uncomfortable.

The next morning, we had a very serious conversation. I did not remove the camera.

And my mother-in-law no longer has any right to interfere with how I raise my daughter.
