“Well then, top student, did your gold medal help you? Look at what we have become — and how pathetic you look,” former classmates mocked a modest girl at the reunion, believing she was still the same quiet and obedient person 😢
But what she did next shocked everyone 😱

The heavy glass door of the restaurant “Terrassa” opened with a quiet creak. Maria paused for a moment on the threshold, looked over the noisy hall, and only then stepped inside.
Inside, the place was crowded. Music was playing loudly, waiters were moving quickly between the tables, and the air smelled of expensive perfume, fried meat, and wine. In the center of the hall stood a long table where a group of her former classmates were already sitting.
Fifteen years had passed since graduation.
Maria had not come here out of nostalgia. She simply wanted to close an old chapter of her life and look at the people with whom she had once sat in the same classroom every day.
She adjusted her simple green linen dress and calmly walked up to the table.
“Oh, just look who has arrived!” a loud female voice exclaimed.
It was Lilia. At school she had been considered the most beautiful girl in the class, and now she sat in a bright red dress with perfectly styled hair.
Lilia carefully looked Maria up and down.
“Maria? We didn’t expect to see you,” Igor smirked, the former school athlete who had now noticeably gained weight.
Maria calmly greeted everyone and sat down on an empty chair at the edge of the table.
The conversation at the table was already lively. Everyone was talking about their lives, but it felt more like a competition.
Someone talked about expensive cars.
Someone boasted about new apartments.
Someone spoke about how many times a year they flew abroad for vacation.
Maria listened quietly and sometimes nodded. In her hands she held a glass of water with lemon.
“Maria, what do you do now?” Lilia suddenly asked loudly, deliberately raising her voice.
The conversations at the table immediately fell silent.
Everyone turned toward her.
Lilia smiled and slowly rotated her glass.
“We were just remembering school. You were the smartest among us. Always sitting with books.”
She leaned slightly forward.
“So what? Where did all that intelligence get you now?”
Several people at the table smirked.
“You probably work somewhere for a small salary,” Lilia continued. “In an archive or a library.”
Someone laughed quietly.
Igor burst out laughing.
“Remember what we used to call her?” he said. “Scarecrow.”
Laughter broke out around the table again.
Maria looked at them calmly.
Back in school that word had hurt her deeply. She had been a quiet girl who wore her brother’s old sweaters, large glasses, and almost always sat with her books.
She helped them during tests, allowed them to copy homework, and pulled half the class through their exams.
And in return she heard nothing but jokes and mockery.
Maria slowly placed her glass on the table and looked at Lilia.
There was no anger in her eyes. Only calmness.
These people were still living exactly the same way they had fifteen years ago. They simply did not realize it.
And the most interesting thing was that no one at that table even suspected who Maria had become over all those years. 😢😲

Maria slowly placed the glass on the table and was about to stand up when a man in a strict suit approached their table.
He looked a little nervous.
“Excuse me… may I speak with you for a minute?” he said, addressing Maria.
Everyone at the table fell silent in surprise.
“My wife watches your channel every evening,” the man continued. “She recognized you immediately at the entrance and asked me to take a photo.”
He held out his phone.
Maria smiled slightly.
“Of course.”
They quickly took the photo, the man thanked her, and returned to his table.
A strange silence hung over the table.
Lilia frowned.
“Wait…” she said slowly. “Who… are you?”
Maria looked at her calmly.
“I am a journalist,” she replied.
Igor smirked.
“Well then, top student, did your gold medal help you? Look at what we have become — and how pathetic you look,” the former classmates had mocked the modest girl at the reunion, thinking she was still the same quiet and obedient person.
“So what? Nowadays every second blogger calls himself a journalist.”
Maria shook her head.
“I work for a national news channel. I host an investigative program.”
Lilia suddenly grabbed her phone and began searching for something.
After a few seconds, her face changed.
On the screen was a photo of Maria from the news.
Below it was the headline.
“Maria Volkova — the journalist whose investigations helped expose dozens of major corruption cases.”
Lilia slowly lowered the phone.
“Is that… you?”
Maria nodded calmly.
“I did not get into television through acquaintances,” she said. “And not through someone’s connections.”
For a moment she looked at everyone at the table.
“I simply studied a lot and worked a lot.”
No one laughed anymore.
Maria calmly stood up from the table, took her bag and said:
“I was glad to see you.”

She left the restaurant just as calmly as she had entered.
