When Sofia realized she was pregnant, she tried not to get her hopes up too early. After several years of failures, she had grown used to not believing fully in miracles, so she simply went on living, trying not to think about the bad. But the strange things started almost immediately, and it was not a human who felt it first. It was a horse.
The old bay stallion named Argus had lived in their yard for many years. He was calm, almost lazy, rarely reacted sharply, and always behaved the same way. Until Sofia began coming out to him with a slightly rounded belly.
The first time, she didn’t pay attention. Argus simply came closer than usual, lowered his head, and almost touched her belly with his nose.
— “Hey… what’s wrong with you?” she said softly, stepping back slightly.
The horse didn’t move. It stood still, as if listening.
The next day, everything repeated. As soon as Sofia stepped into the yard, Argus immediately walked toward her. He no longer waited for apples and no longer reached out his hands. Only one thing interested him — her belly. He gently touched it with his lips, snorted quietly, and sometimes ran his muzzle over the fabric, as if trying to sense something.
Sofia felt uneasy. It no longer looked like ordinary affection. It looked… strange.
A few days later, she went out to the horse alone. Argus approached too quickly, then suddenly reared up and placed his front hooves on her shoulders. The woman screamed in fear. Her heart was beating so hard she almost lost her balance. At that moment, her husband Daniel appeared and pulled the horse away.
— “What’s wrong with him?” he said sharply.
But there was no answer. The veterinarian examined Argus and stated confidently that the animal was completely healthy.
However, the behavior did not change. On the contrary, it worsened. Argus became nervous when Sofia approached and reacted especially aggressively toward Daniel. He could suddenly jerk his head back, strike with a hoof, or snort as if sensing a threat.
Sofia found herself increasingly afraid to approach him. Yet something inside her kept telling her that the horse was not trying to harm her. That thought would not leave her.
She began reading forums, stories, and articles about animals that react strangely to pregnancy. And the more she read, the colder she felt inside.
At twenty-three weeks, the pain began. At first mild, but it grew stronger each day. One evening, the pain became so severe that Sofia couldn’t get up from the couch.
— “Daniel… we need to go to the hospital. Now.”
At the hospital, she was immediately sent for an ultrasound. Sofia lay there, gripping the edge of the bed while the doctor moved the probe over her belly. At first, everything looked normal. Then the doctor fell silent.
He stared at the screen for far too long. His face tightened. He zoomed in, then again.
The room went quiet. Sofia felt a cold shiver down her back.
— “Is something wrong?” she asked softly.
The doctor didn’t answer right away. He took a deep breath and said:
— “I need to call the police.”

A few minutes later, two more doctors entered the room. They exchanged glances, spoke quietly among themselves, and then one of them turned to Sofia.
— The fetus has a serious problem, he said carefully. — At an early stage, a medical error was made.
Daniel suddenly tensed.
— What kind of error?
— You were given a hormonal medication, the doctor continued. — However, according to the data, the wrong dosage was used. This affected the development of the child’s internal organs. We see signs of an early deformation of the intestines and pressure on the diaphragm.
Sofia stopped breathing.
— Can it… be fixed?
The doctor nodded, but his expression remained serious.
— We need to act quickly. There is a possibility to perform an intrauterine surgery to correct the problem. If you had come later, the consequences could have been irreversible.
Sofia closed her eyes, trying to process what she had just heard. At that moment, she suddenly remembered Argus.
His persistence. His strange behavior. How he kept reaching toward her stomach over and over again. As if he was trying to warn her that something was wrong.
The operation was performed the very next day.
When everything was over, the doctor said with a smile:

Sofia began to cry.
