LIFE STORIES

When her family turned their backs on her, Maria had only one path left: she understood how dangerous the river was, but she could not even imagine that something far more terrifying than its violent current was waiting for her on the other side 😯😱

When the village found out that Maria had given birth to a child without a husband, everything was decided quickly. First in whispers, then louder, and finally out in the open: either she stays — but without the child, or she leaves forever.

No one even tried to pretend there was a third option.

Maria did not argue. She did not cry. She did not beg. That same night, she gathered a few belongings, wrapped the newborn in a warm blanket, and tied the baby tightly to herself. The house where she had grown up was left behind — along with the people who had called her their own just yesterday.

In the morning, she left the village.

There was only one path ahead. On one side lay a dense forest — dark, damp, filled with sounds that sent chills down the spine. On the other — a deep ravine. And ahead — the river. Wide, cold, with a heavy, raging current. The forest was too dangerous. The ravine was a dead end. Only the river remained. Beyond it began the road to the city. And there — a world where no one knew her name.

When Maria reached the shore, people were already standing behind her. Relatives, neighbors, familiar faces — and not a single look that held even a trace of warmth.

She stepped into the water. The cold struck sharply, but she did not stop. She took another step. Then another. The water rose, her clothes grew wet, the current pulled her downward.

— If you cross this river, Maria, there will be no turning back! You will no longer exist for this family! — her brother shouted.

She did not even turn around. She only held the child tighter and said quietly:

— Better to be dead to them… than to live with them.

She kept moving forward.

When the water reached her waist, the current grew noticeably stronger. Every step had to be torn from the river, as if it was trying to stop her at any cost.

And at that very moment, Maria lifted her eyes to the opposite shore. There was something there far more terrifying than the river’s current and the anger of her family. But she knew there was no way back… 😨😱

At first, she thought it was just a shadow. But the figure did not disappear. The man stood motionless, staring straight at her.

She did not recognize him at once. Then her heart tightened. He was a middle-aged man. A former prisoner. A dangerous person. Someone people avoided.

He looked directly at her.

People spoke about him even in neighboring villages. A man others kept their distance from. The one who had returned… but never became one of them again.

The most frightening thing was not his face.

The most frightening thing was that he did not look surprised. He had been waiting.

Maria stopped for only a second. That was enough. Her foot slipped. The ground vanished beneath her.

The current struck with a force she did not expect. The water nearly covered her completely, the cold instantly knocking the air from her lungs. She held the child above the water, but she herself felt no support.

Shouts came from the shore — but no one moved.

And only then did the man on the opposite side spring into action.

He stepped into the water as if he felt neither the cold nor the current. He moved quickly and confidently, as if he knew this river better than anyone else.

Maria could no longer resist.

And at the last moment, hands pulled her out of the current. First, he pushed the child onto the shore. Then her.

The girl lay on the wet ground, gasping for air, still unable to believe she was alive.

The man stood beside her. Wet, with a heavy gaze, with that same scar everyone talked about. For a few seconds, he simply looked at her, as if deciding something.

Then he said quietly:

— I will stay by your side… if you allow me.

Maria looked up. She had just lost everything. But for the first time in a long while, she had a choice.
